Middletown resident Jason Simpson, 44, was sentenced on Wednesday, April 9 in Orange County Court following his guilty plea in February to second-degree attempted burglary in connection with an October 2024 break-in in Middletown, the Orange County District Attorney's Office announced.
This marks Simpson’s third violent felony conviction and fourth felony overall, qualifying him for a life sentence under New York’s persistent felony offender laws, the DA's Office said.
The incident occurred on October 13, 2024, around 11:20 p.m., when the victim awoke in her City of Middletown home to find Simpson standing over her, having turned on the bedroom light. Prosecutors said Simpson placed his hand over her mouth and told her to be quiet or he would kill her. He then began to pull her shirt down but fled the scene after hearing people approaching, as Daily Voice reported.
Police found Simpson nearby shortly afterward. According to authorities, he confessed to the crime and admitted during court proceedings that he entered the home with the intent to commit a crime.
"We will do everything in our power to seek lengthy sentences for those who reign terror on their victims," DA David M. Hoovler said after sentencing.
